For all those that know, Guy De Maupassant was a wonderfully gifted short story writer. "Two Friends" is no different. This simple story of two friends, who enjoyed fishing together before the war, ask for and receive permission to fish once again at their favorite place within earshot of the Prussian guns. They soon find themselves in enemy hands, and are given a chance to go free if one or the other would betray both their homeland and their friend by giving up the password to the Prussian commander. Will they? Or, which one will betray their friendship to live?
We have just added "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka to the Adam Smith Academy site. This is a wonderfully horrible short story that every high school and college prep student should read. With the free audio text, your students can read and listen to it in one evening's homework. Use the following link for your students!
